Stephen Lee Burner, better known by his stage name Thundercat, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He’s also won a Grammy for his collaboration with Kendrick Lamar on the album These Walls.

Bruner started playing the bass at a young age, and by the age of 15, he had a minor hit in Germany as a member of the boy band No Curfew. He replaced former bass player Josh Paul in the Los Angeles punk band Suicidal Tendencies a year later, replacing his brother Ronald Jr. Bruner made his studio debut on Kamasi Washington’s Live at 5th Street Dick’s and The Proclamation, where he played electric bass.

Bruner is a studio musician who has been praised for his work on Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah (2008) and Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma (2010). In 2011, he released The Golden Age of Apocalypse, his first solo album, which featured Flying Lotus’ production and was inspired by 1970s fusion artists including Stanley Clarke and George Duke. In the following two years, he reunited with fellow Brainfeeder artist Flying Lotus in the studio, contributing to the Lotus’s albums Before the Quiet Comes (2012) and You’re Dead!
